ACONTECEU EM LOS ALAMITOS

COMENTARIOS DE BLOOD HORSE DAILY NEWS

A claimer put away a champion and a grade 1 winner July 8 at Los Alamitos Race Course.
To be fair, Skye Diamonds has come a long way for Tom Acker, Allen Racing, and Bloom Racing Stables since trainer Bill Spawr put in a $40,000 claim for her Aug. 27 at Del Mar. But late in the stretch in the $200,000 Great Lady M. Stakes (G2), the California-bred First Dude  filly looked as classy as could be. Watch Video
After a stalking trip behind early leader and grade 1 victress Constellation, who was pressed by multiple graded winner Pretty N Cool in the 6 1/2-furlong test, Skye Diamonds made a simultaneous move to attack the leaders with 2016 champion female sprinter Finest City.
But the champion lacked the late kick that brought her into the winner's circle after the 2016 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), while Skye Diamonds found her best stride late under jockey Tiago Pereira.
"My filly has speed, but I wanted to sit off (Constellation and Pretty N Cool)," Pereira said. "I moved when (Finest City) moved and she was very strong in the stretch."
Pretty N Cool faded, and Constellation dug in after setting fractions of :22.26 and :44.64 through a half-mile, but was no match for Skye Diamonds, who hit the wire 2 1/2 lengths ahead and stopped the clock in 1:14.79. Finest City, the 6-5 favorite, finished third, 2 1/4 lengths behind Constellation.
The Great Lady M. was her first graded win, but since the claim Skye Diamonds has won five races and finished second twice, including a half-length loss to grade 1 winner Vale Dori last time out May 7 in the Adoration Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles. She broke through for her first stakes win in the Dream of Summer for state-breds March 26 at Santa Anita Park.
"She was a 3-year-old and she was a trier, (which) was why we decided to claim her," Spawr said. "We had been watching her a little bit before we claimed her and it has definitely worked out. I could have never imagined this when we first claimed her.
"We started working her on the training track (at Santa Anita) and she loved it. She started running the last quarter in—believe me—:22 and change, not :23 or :24. That's when we kind of knew this was a good filly. The day she won an optional claimer (Feb. 16 by 5 3/4 lengths) in (1:08.91) I was in awe.''
Bred by Dizney Double Diamond, out of the Johannesburg mare Exonerated, Skye Diamonds now has an 8-4-0 record from 15 starts and $449,150 in earnings.
Trainer Ian Kruljac reported Finest City came out of the race fine, but said she will get an extended break before another run in the Filly & Mare Sprint in November at Del Mar.
"She cooled out fine," Kruljac said of the 2016 Great Lady M. winner. "She hung a bit and probably needs some freshening. My fault. It's been a long campaign. We'll see, but she'll probably (train up to) the Breeders' Cup."
