RAPIDINHAS DA TDN

THE WEEKLY WRAP: LADIES OF A CERTAIN AGE

By Emma Berry
Let's not forget, however great the lure of the sales ring or a wafting cheque book may be, Thoroughbreds are bred to race. In the case of Prince Khalid Abdullah, Coolmore and Peter Brant, it could be said that we have three owner-breeders who are somewhat immune to commercially-based decisions when it comes to keeping a horse in training. Nevertheless, they are to be commended for racing on mares of the calibre of Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}).

At 'only' five, Magical is the youngster of the trio. Even at six, the other two clearly still have many good years ahead of them at stud, granted a normal run. Their eventual offspring will likely race for their respective breeders, initially at least, so it's not a case of missing out on sales of potentially lucrative yearlings, but remaining in training does present a degree of risk, however sound and talented the individual in question. It would have been all too easy to opt for the safe route and retire any of these horses after their 4-year-old seasons but, thankfully for the racing public, we are still able to enjoy their exploits on the track, putting them in an elite bracket of older racemares alongside the likes of Goldikova (Ire), Ouija Board (GB), Treve (Fr), Winx (Aus) and Black Caviar (Aus).

HISTORY-SEEKING STRADIVARIUS FACES
DAUNTING TEST

Now that Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) has managed to establish unquestionable dominance over the older stayers, the popular chestnut has a feat of magnitude to pull off on Tuesday if he is to secure a record fourth renewal of the G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup. That involves surrendering a 15-pound weight-for-age advantage to a G1 Irish Derby winner in Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}), who like Bjorn Nielsen's star did three years ago comes here looking to exploit that anomaly. Weeks before Stradivarius upstaged Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) in the 2017 edition, he had garnered the G2 Queen's Vase and there is a symmetry in the fact that Santiago also captured that Royal Ascot contest en route to the June 27 Curragh Classic. With the long-established weight-for-age scale still generally unchallenged as an accurate measurement of relative maturity, this race will serve as one of the more thorough examinations of its logic and continued relevance in recent times. Cont. p4

PRIX MAURICE DE GHEEST TARGET FOR
GOLDEN HORDE

Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}), a winner of the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June, will next take part in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Aug. 9. Clive Cox has earmarked that French feature for his charge, who most recently ran third in the G1 July Cup on July 11. As a juvenile, the Al Mohamediya Racing colourbearer scooped the G2 Richmond S. and was third and second, respectively, in the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S.

AMELIE LEMERCIER JOINS HARAS DE
BOUQUETOT

Recent Godolphin Flying Start graduate Amelie Lemercier has been appointed to the role of business development at Al Shaqab's Haras de Bouquetot. Previously a marketing assistant for His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs, Lemercier has also worked for the Wertheimer brothers, Coolmore, Primus, as well as Graham Motion and Elite Sales in America and Newgate and Star Thoroughbreds Down Under. She will be heavily involved in stallion nominations, sales and marketing at Bouquetot.

KAYF TARA PENSIONED

Overbury Stud'Kayf Tara (GB) (Sadler's Wells--Colorspin {Fr}, by High Top {Ire}), a leading National Hunt sire in Britain for many years, has been pensioned at 26 due to declining fertility, Racing Post reported on Monday.
