 SEPTEMBER RUN WINS THE COOLMORE

by Paul Vettise

Vastly-improved filly September Run (Exceed And Excel) upstaged an array of well-credentialled colts in the G1 Coolmore Stud S. to take major honours in a spring sprinting feature often billed as a stallion-making race.

This was more a broodmare-making edition of the Coolmore with September Run flying the flag for the fairer sex to comfortably beat fellow filly Swats That (Shamus Award) with third-placed Wild Ruler (Snitzel) faring best of the males.

The Chris Waller-trained September Run has been a revelation since she was sent to the Melbourne arm of the operation and completed a hat-trick of wins following previous Listed successes in the Cap D'Antibes S. and the Poseidon S.

She was ridden a treat by Craig Williams with the pre-race plan of moving into contention half-way through the 1200 metre contest executed to perfection and September Run exploded clear to win going away by 1.75l.

MAIDEN G1 FOR TRAINER AND JOCKEY

by TDN AusNZ

Johnny Get Angry (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) provided trainer Denis Pagan and jockey Lackie King with their first Group 1 win as he out-stayed his rivals in the G1 Victoria Derby.

King had Johnny Get Angry settled midfield and one off the fence on the back of favourite Young Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) and tracked up to his outside around the bend, challenging him all the way down the straight before hitting the front at the 300 metre mark and going on the win by 1l.

Matt Cumani came agonisingly close to training his first Group 1 winner as Hit The Shot (Dundeel {NZ}) flew home from well back in the field to score second while Young Werther managed to hold on to finish 0.2l away in third.
