Brazilian-bred Redattore, who stands at Harris Farms in California and shuttles to Haras Sao Jose da Serra in Brazil for the Southern Hemisphere, is an intriguing member of the impressive group of US-based second-crop sires that includes Medaglia d’Oro, Birdstone, Tapit, Candy Ride (Arg), and Speightstown. He’s also the cheapest of the group, standing for $4,000, and the least heralded, although he’s the sire of more Group race winners — six – than any of the others on this list. Click here to see the Thoroughbred Times second-crop leading sires list. (Click on their names to read more about this crop of stallions from Jack Werk and Alan Porter.) Now, before you say Redattore has an unfair advantage because he has Northern and Southern Hemisphere crops working for him, whereas the others have only Northern Hemisphere crops, note that all of his Group winners are in Brazil. Like Spend a Buck, who wasn’t too much here but a revelation in Brazil, Redattore is outstandingly more effective in Brazil, where he was bred and initially raced. He showed his stripes last year when his 2-year-old son Estrela do Oriente won the Group 1 GP ABCPCC at Gavea in Rio. (The colt is owned by Swede Stefan Friborg, who won the same race Sunday with Uncle Tom.) Another Group 1 winner for the stallion is Kapo di Tutti, who won the GP Presidente da Republica at Cidade Jardim in Sao Paulo. Then there’s Tango Uno, who won the Group 1 GP Parana, and there’s also Sagacita, who won the Group 1 GP Zeila Gonzaga Peixoto de Castro at Gavea. These four Group 1 winners are joined by Group 2 winner Notavel Surena and Group 3 winner Davignon. Finally, there’s the Listed winner Al Arab. That’s seven black type winners, four Group 1 winners, and six Group winners — all in Brazil. Redattore’s late sire, Roi Normand, was a top-class stallion in Brazil, where he stood at Haras Santa Ana do Rio Grande, where he died in 2007. His daughter Riboletta was a multiple Grade 1 winner here and an Eclipse champion in 2000. This year his son Gibson, also owned by Friborg, won the Group 1 GP Cruzeiro do Sul — Gavea’s Derby equivalent. Redattore was a Group 1 winner at 4 in Brazil and a Grade 1 winner at 6 and 8 in California. He was best at a mile on the turf.
