O cavalo normal de corrida nunca deve perder contato visual com seus adversários. Ele tem que sentir a presença dos mesmos, para acirrar-lhe a vontade de vencer. O que Estrela Monarchos fez em seu último embate foi uma prova de sua extrema qualidade. Que me perdi-e o Gil, que a conhece melhor do que ninguém, mas ela entrou na reta, sem o menor contacto visual com os dois cavalos que estavam a sua frente. E mesmo assim fuzilou. Agora será fácil dizer que o jovem bridão tinha a medida de seus dois adversários, todo o tempo. Eu, não penso assim. Por minutos senti a carreira no saco. Pois bem, mudando de continente, Earthquake entrou na reta final do Golden Slipper à frente e absoluta, corrida que foi, o tempo todo, como uma autentica barbada. E se deu ao luxo de vir a meio de raia. Todos a exceção de um de seus adversários se despregaram da cerca e mantiveram contacto visual com a grande favorita, já que a luta parecia ser pela segunda colocação. E com a bolsa ofertada, uma segunda colocação, já era uma festa financeira. Mossfun, filha do reprodutor que o senhor LuiZ afirmou que não valia nada, se manteve junto aos paus e com isto saiu do meio do pelotão para a segunda colocação. Assumiu sorrateiramente a ponta e quando Earthquake pode a vislumbrar, a Inês era morta e devidamente enterrada. Já estava a beira da missa de sétimo dia. Earthquake tentou voltar, mas não deu. Paciência.
Mossfun fez uma corrida perfeita e mereceu a vitória, mas aqui entre nós, eu gostaria de ter visto Earthquake mais perto da cerca, pois, eu acho que no olho com olho, o resultado poderia ser diferente.
A mãe de Mossfun, tem na realidade um olho para a alegria. primeiro por ser uma descendente de Danzig, segundo por descender via materna da grande ramagem 4-n e pelo simples fato de trazer em seu pedigree imbreeds em Northern Dancer 5x5x4, Nijinsky 5x3, Canny Lad 4x2 e Lunchtime 3x4, o que em outras palavras sugere, que um elemento reforçado em duplicações de chefes de raça, passe a ter uma força de transmissão mais eloquente de transmissão de caracteres, que fizeram estes duplicados, serem o que forem, dentro e fora das pistas.

McDonald was able to stick to the inside fence and beat the long-time favourite Earthquake and Bring Me The Maid.
The Sydney based New Zealand rider kept his cool after Mossfun dawdled out of the barriers and was a clear last in the first one hundred metres.

With Eloping setting a solid pace and Earthquake coming across from a wide gate, McDonald was able to pass a couple of runners and settle just worse than midfield.
Kerrin McEvoy had a strong hold on Earthquake ($2.40 favourite) at the top of the straight and after letting her go at the 300m looked to have enough left to go and win.
But the winning move came from McDonald who was able to save plenty of ground by staying on the fence and Mossfun ($5.50) finally got the better of Earthquake in the final fifty metres to score by three quarters of a length with Bring Me The Maid ($11) also running on from back in the field to finish third a further length away.
Mossfun’s win is the first Golden Slipper trophy for the training team of John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes as co-trainers although they were all involved with the wins of Guineas in 1997 and Forensics in 2007 when John Hawkes was the head trainer for the Ingham family.
John Hawkes wasn’t on hand to enjoy the win but Michael was quick to praise the cool ride of McDonald in the Golden Slipper.
“The last thing I said to him was not panic, if something happens don’t blow it. He just rode for luck, he knew he was on the best horse in the race, he knew she got threw the ground. He never got off the fence, he just knew what he had and he just kept coming,” Michael said.
McDonald said that he listened to the advice of fellow jockey Jim Cassidy who told him to stick to the inside fence.
“I gotta thank Jimmy Cassidy. He actually told me if you are going good hug the rail and watching him beat me in the Coolmore, I learned a lot, he definitely out rode me.”
