HORSE RACING LEGENDS

 

ARIEL was bred by Harry Sinclair and Rancocas Stables and later stood stud at Mereworth Farm. 

Ariel was by Eternal, the 1918 Co-Champion Two Year Old Colt, out of Adana by Adam, the winner of the 1904 Prix Eclipse.

His second dam, Mannie Himyar was a full sister to Domino, the 1893 Champion Two Year Old Colt; and the 1893 Horse of the Year.

His Broodmare Sire, Adam was a full brother to Ajax, the winner of the 1904 Prix du Jockey Club; and the sire of Teddy, the 1916 French and Spanish Champion Three Year Old Colt.

Ariel was a half brother: 

to Ladana: the winner of the 1930 Clover Stakes; and the second dam of Twilight Tear, the 1944 Horse of the Year; 

to Palestra: the dam of Lady Maryland, the 1939 Champion Handicap Mare;

to Nedana: the winner of the 1925 Gazelle Handicap; and the dam of Swing and Sway, the winner of the 1942 Whitney Handicap. Swing and Sway sired Saggy who was the only horse to defeat Citation in his three year old season defeating him in the 1948 Chesapeake Trial Stakes. Saggy would go on to sire Carry Back, the 1961 Champion Three Year Old Colt and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975;

to Celidon: the winner of the 1926 Oyster Bay Handicap.

Ariel made 10 starts with 6 wins 2 seconds 0 thirds earning $31,230.

At two in 1927, Ariel won the Youthful Stakes over Stephanus and Mowlee, the winner of the 1928 Southampton Handicap; and the Saratoga Special over Sun Edwin, the winner of the 1928 Saranac Handicap, and Distraction, the winner of the 1928 Wood Memorial.

He was second in the Remsen Handicap to Excalibur and ahead of Leonard B., the winner of the 1930 R. J. Mackenzie Memorial Handicap.

At three in 1928, he won the Kingston Handicap over Croyden, the winner of the 1926 Jerome Handicap, and Happy Argo, the winner of the 1928 Fleetwing Handicap.

Ariel was the seventh Leading Sire in 1940; eighth in 1946 and tenth in 1944. He was the 1940 and 1942 Leading Juvenile Sire List By Number of Winners.

Some of his best were:

Airflame: the winner of the 1938 Carter Handicap.

Airpan: the winner of the 1943 Victoria Stakes.

Aridisical: Stakes winner.

Ariel Lad: the winner of the 1944 Fall Highweight Handicap.

Ariel Song: the winner of the 1947 Suwannee River Handicap.

Ariel Toy: the winner of the 1939 Arkansas Derby.

Ariel Cross: the winner of the 1936 New Years Stakes.

Blue Yonder: the winner of the 1946 Potomac Stakes.

Education: the winner of the 1946 Washington Park Futurity.

Good Turn: the winner of the 1940 Sanford Memorial Stakes.

Breezy Louise: the winner of the 1945 Debutante Stakes.

Planetoid: the winner of the 1936 Jeanne d’Arc Stakes and the dam of the great foundation mare Grey Flight.

Grey Flight produced fifteen named foals of which fourteen won. Her best were: 

Misty Morn: the 1955 Champion Three Year Old Filly and 1955 Co-Champion Handicap Mare. She produced: Bold Lad, the 1964 Champion Two Year Old Colt; and Successor, the 1966 Champion Two Year Old Colt. She was named the 1963 Broodmare of the Year. Misty Morn, is the second dam of Bright Sun, the winner of the 1969 Schuylerville Stakes and the third dam of: Dispute, the winner of the 1993 Kentucky Oaks; and Adjudicating, the winner of the 1989 Champagne Stakes.

Misty Flight: the winner of the 1957 Remsen Stakes.

Misty Day: the winner of the 1962 Sport Page Handicap.

Bold Princess: the winner of the 1962 Schuylerville Stakes. She is the dam of: Predictable, the winner of the 1969 Selima Stakes; Intrepid Hero, the winner of the 1976 United Nations Handicap; and Sovereign Dancer, was the sire of: Gate Dancer, the winner of the 1984 Preakness; and Louis Quatorze, the winner of the 1996 Preakness.

Signore: the winner of the 1966 Saratoga National Hurdle Stakes.

What a Pleasure: the winner of the 1967 Hopeful Stakes. He was the 1975 and 1976 Leading Sire. He is the sire of Foolish Pleasure, the 1974 Champion Two Year Old Colt; and Honest Pleasure, the 1975 Champion Two Year Old Colt, among others.

Clear Ceiling: is the dam of: Quick as Lightning, the winner of the 1980 One Thousand Guineas; and Stratospheric, the winner of the 1981 Waterford Candelabra Stakes. She is the second dam of: Inside Information, the 1995 Champion Handicap Mare;  and is the third dam of Kona Gold, the 2000 Champion Sprinter; and Smuggler, the 2005 Champion Three Year Old Filly.
