This is an original 1929 photo of Neddie.


He was bred by Edward McLean, the owner of the Washington Post and the Hope Diamond. Neddie was was purchased by Willis Sharpe Kilmer. Later after Kilmer’s death in 1941, Neddie was sold to W. W. Vaughan.

Neddie was by Colin, the 1907 and 1908 Horse of the Year, out of Black Flag by Light Brigade, the winner of the 1913 Jersey Stakes in England.

Neddie was a half brother:

to Hard Baked: was second in the 1941 Selima Stakes. She is the third dam of Summer Scandal, the winner of the 1966 Maskette Handicap. Hard Baked is also the third dam of North Flight, the winner of the 1969 Kent Stakes.

Neddie made 14 starts with 5 wins 2 seconds and 2 thirds earning: $44,000.

At two in 1928, Neddie won the Eastern Shore Stakes over Cheers and Justinian, the winner of the 1929 Kingston Handicap; and the Richard Johnson Stakes over Jean Valjean, the winner of the 1930 Independence Handicap, and Marine, the winner of the 1929 Miller Stakes.

He finished third in the Endurance Handicap behind Soul of Honor and Sunvir, the winner of the 1930 Chateau Laurier Handicap; and in the Pimlico Futurity behind High Strung, the 1928 Champion Two Year Old Colt and Dr. Freeland, the winner of the 1929 Preakness.

At stud he sired:

Nedayr: the winner of the 1937 Pimlico Futurity.

Good Goods: finished third in the 1934 Belmont Stakes. The sire of Alsab: the 1941 Champion Two Year Old Colt and the 1942 Champion Three Year Old Colt. 

Alsab sired Armageddon, the winner of the 1951 Champagne Stakes. This is the sire line of: Battle Joined, the winner of the 1961 Saratoga Special Stakes; Ack Ack, the 1971 Horse of the Year; Broad Brush, the winner of the 1986 Wood Memorial Stakes; and many others. 

Alsab: sired Myrtle Charm, the 1948 Champion Two Year Old Filly, the dam of Myrtle’s Jet, the winner of the 1954 Frizette Stakes. Myrtle Charm is also the third dam of Seattle Slew, the 1977 Triple Crown winner.

Alsab: sired Scotch Verdict who was unraced. She is the dam of Desert Trial, the winner of the 1966 Del Mar Oaks. Desert Trial produced: Desert Vixen, the 1973 Champion Three Year Old Filly and the 1974 Champion Handicap Mare; and Valid Appeal, the winner of the 1975 Dwyer Stakes. Scotch Verdict also produced Kilts N Kapers, the winner of the 1973 Monmouth Oaks.
